A project to unlock human creative abilities and flourishing

01 / The mission

What are humans
capable of?

Then. is a project to unlock human creative abilities and human flourishing.

Through research, writing and experiments, we explore how people can direct their thinking, feeling and acting, and develop models and systems that grow those abilities.

The aim is to widen what people can actually do and become, personally and together, while keeping open what they value and choose to pursue. That work is grounded in an ethical commitment to human flourishing.

02 / Three responsibilitiesSustain · Protect · Grow

Life needs
looking after.

A person, a team, a community: each depends on a functioning system. Then. approaches the care and development of those systems through three connected responsibilities.

They belong together. What we grow needs sustaining; what sustains us needs protection.

01

Sustain

Keep the capacity to function.

Provide the inputs, conditions and everyday work a system needs to keep going. Food and rest for a person. Time, resources and maintenance for a shared project.

What needs to keep flowing?

02

Protect

Care for that capacity.

Prevent and repair harm, waste and loss. Build buffers for the inevitable ups and downs, so people and the systems they depend on can recover.

What could be lost or damaged?

03

Grow

Make more possible.

Take opportunities, develop abilities and create conditions for future possibilities. Make room to learn, try something new and share what becomes possible.

What could we become able to do?

A way to orient our choices. What each responsibility calls for depends on the people, the situation and what matters to them.

03 / From intention to consequence

An intention is
a beginning.

We can name an outcome we care about, understand the conditions around it, and choose something to do. Then we have to look at what actually happens.

The consequences help us decide what to keep, what to repair and what to try next. Other people’s experience belongs in that picture too.

  1. 01 / Articulate

    What matters?

Name the outcome and who it is for.

  2. 02 / Plan

    What can we do?

Understand the conditions. Choose a next step.

  3. 03 / Act

    Try it in the world.

Put time, care and resources into the work.

  4. 04 / Evaluate

    What happened?

    Notice effects, costs and surprises.

Adjust. Bring what we learn back to the intention and the plan.

A working practice, repeated as conditions change.
04 / Shared gardenAn illustration

Pull weeds.
Plant seeds.

Pull a weed before it sets seed, and you stop more weeds from taking root. Plant a seed and tend what grows, and one tree can become the beginning of an orchard.

Small investments made along the way can have a large cumulative effect. The work is to stop harm from multiplying and create the conditions for benefits to grow and spread. Over time, both change what becomes possible.

Water and ongoing care sustain the garden. Pulling weeds before they spread protects it. Planting and tending new trees help it grow and bear fruit.

The questions to return to

What should we stop from spreading?
What could we help grow?

05 / An inquiry, in practice

Thinking, making,
learning.

Research helps us ask better questions. Writing makes ideas available for conversation. Experiments let us try them in the world and learn from the results.

Essential explores personal wellbeing within this wider inquiry. Then.Design is an experiment in helping people and AI work together with clear intentions. Each explores one part of the broader human and social mission of Then.
